Timeline of standalone gigabit copper PHYs

The following shows a timeline for gigabit PHYs from 1999 until today. Missing are Realtek and Attansic.

I updated the doc to show the trends on a per-port basis for cost and power. While the PHYs have different MAC interfaces, and some press releases quoted in 10K and others in 1K quantity, you can see the general trend toward lower cost and lower power due to Moore’s Law (and competition).

Ross retires

Coworkers come and go all the time — layoffs and new jobs —  but it’s rare in this business to see a colleague retire.  My colleague, boss, and friend retired on Friday after 11.5 years with Broadcom and 38 years in Engineering starting with Control Data in the early 1970s.  I wish Ross the best in his new pursuits including an FAA flight instructor certification.  After a fantastic and humble speech yesterday at his retirement dinner I was worried Ross would go quietly but the impromptu round of tequilla shots with officemates before heading out the door capped the day off old Broadcom style, and leaves me with a headache hours later as I type this.  Good luck and good day Ross!
